Return Sand
Storage Silos
Three return sand storage silos are capable of holding 60 tons
each. They provide a large mass of system sand which helps to
even out variations in the return sand.
WARD Ironworks
Vibratory Screen
All return sand is passed through a vibratory screen before being
reused. The screen has 1/8" openings in it, ensuring core
butts, burnt sand balls and scrap metal are removed from the sand.
Simpson MC-150
Multi-Cooler
A new Simpson MC-150 Multi-Cooler was installed in the summer
of 1999. The cooler can process up to 150 tons per hour of hot
return sand, reducing its temperature to between 80 °F and
115 °F by spraying water onto the sand and blowing air through
the sand. The cooler also controls the moisture in the sand to
+/- 0.1%, providing consistent sand to the muller.
Simpson 22G
Multi-Mull
A Simpson 22G Multi-Mull, capable of processing up to 100 tons
per hour of prepared sand, supplies additional water to the cool
sand and mulls the sand to provide the desired properties required
by the molding machines.
Hartley Compactability Controller ...

A Hartley Compactability Controller monitors the operation of
the muller. It measures incoming sand temperature and moisture
content, controlling the water addition to the muller. It then
repeatedly samples the sand being discharged from the muller,
to ensure the sand has the desired properties.

The entire sand system is controlled by Allen Bradley PLC-5 programmable
controls, ensuring that top quality sand is available to all of
the moding lines on demand.
