Tip #4 - Ten Basic Rules of Casting Design

  1. Avoid casting strain

  2. Fillet all sharp angles

  3. Bring the minimum number of sections together

  4. Avoid sharp angles and abrupt section changes

  5. Design all sections as nearly uniform in thickness as possible

  6. Design for casting soundness to eliminate shrinkage or porosity

  7. Proportion dimensions of inner walls correctly

  8. Bosses, lugs, and pads should not be used unless absolutely necessary

  9. Design ribs and brackets for maximum effectiveness

  10. Allow for material shrinkage and machine finish in dimensional tolerances
